THE CHARGE is an offbeat contemporary drama, where elements of the supernatural clash with the everyday human challenges of life; it's inspired by shows like Misfits and You, Me and the Apocalypse, with a good dose of Brian Friel's Faith Healer thrown in.
It tells the story of a young woman born with healing powers, but powers which only work under certain conditions, dependent upon her emotional state. It explores how she becomes sanctified by some and reviled by others; and the hysteria and backlash that she faces when her abilities become public knowledge. It asks what everyday people would do when confronted with evidence of the miraculous; but when the miracle sometimes seems to have no logic or justice to it.
A scene from THE CHARGE was longlisted for the Tron Theatre's Progressive Playwright Award, and performed in a rehearsed reading in autumn 2015, directed by Paul Brotherston, with the following cast:
Martin Donaghy - LUCAS Dawn Sievewright - CAITLIN
I also held a week-long R&D process on the play, directed by Emily Reutlinger, with HND Acting students from MGA Academy of Performing Arts in April 2017.
THE CHARGE is undergoing further development.
